Becoming a Member
People's definition of what bushwalking means may vary widely, and it is important that people considering walking with us appreciate our club's position and viewpoint. The group dynamic of the Up and Downers Club is one of enthusiasm for bushwalking and the natural environment combined with the enjoyment of sharing these experiences with others. Our members are men and women from many and varied backgrounds and are aged from 40s to mid-70s. We enjoy lively discussions during the day and a sense of fun is a necessity. The main attribute we seek in new members is enthusiasm for bushwalking. Our Membership Enquiries officer will forward our guidelines for new members to you on request. Prospective members must complete a Temporary Membership form on their first walk and complete 3 qualifying walks with the Club in a six-month period to be eligible for membership. On completion of your qualifying walks, a Club member must nominate you for membership and the completed membership form and fee are then forwarded to the Secretary. All applications for membership must be approved by the main committee or a representative group thereof. Bushwalking can range from a stroll along a maintained path to a trek through untracked scrub right through to difficult challenges requiring a high level of fitness, stamina and a head for heights. Quite often all the above aspects can be encountered within one walk. Bushwalking is a fairly strenuous activity, so people who have not been exercising regularly or who have a medical condition affecting their fitness are urged to consult their doctor before walking. |
